All I want for Christmas: first, the bike

What to buy a biker for Christmas

Welcome to the first in this seasonal series! The eternal dilemma! What to buy me, I mean, a cyclist, for Christmas? Well, the first thing we need to get sorted out is the bike itself!

Now I have never pretended on this blog to be an expert on bikes and equipment and suchlike so I will just tell you, in case you are not clued up about this - cyclists are never quite satisfied with the bike they have. Now what machine to buy the mountain-biker in your life for Christmas, well I wouldn’t even dare dispense any advice. Here’s an insanely wild generalization though - get any bike made by Specialized and you can’t go far wrong. The more expensive the better!

Indeed, it might be easier to say what NOT to get:

    - don’t buy any bike which costs under, say $500 (rrp - if you pick a bargain up on Ebay or Auction Ads, that’s different)

    - don’t buy a bike from a source which also sells washing machines, kitty litter and groceries - these are invariably mass-market bikes with a price and quality to match (i.e. rubbish).

Go to a proper bike shop, or find out about specific models and have a trawl around eBay for bargains. Last year’s models are often a good bet. Or just ask your cycling friend, son, uncle, daughter - he/she will know best..!

Me, I have a sneaky feeling my trusty Scott Tampico will be serving me for at least the coming year…
