Hello World! From a web expert-beginner!

Off the subject of bikes for the moment, allow me to ramble for a bit!

I’m one of these people (are there more of you out there?!) who never quite seem to get round to sitting down and getting REALLY GOOD at one thing in life. I am forever dabbling in all kinds of stuff, with this constant feeling that I have never quite thoroughly learned to do that ONE THING and do it well.

The closest I have come is with my knowledge of the Serbian language - although I had a head-start I think it is about as good as it’s going to get. I don’t often let myself down - people usually have no idea I am British (well, OK, I’m not entirely!) when I am out and about in Novi Sad, and I am in the process of setting up a high-quality Serbian-English translation service (more soon!)

Bikes are another area: the fact is, I am never going to train enough, ride enough, learn enough, to be able to say that I am a real bike afficionado.

But I like to think that I could call myself a “jack-of-all-trades” - I know A LOT about a GREAT MANY different things, even if I never quite learn all of them to my satisfaction! One of those areas is the net. I was at university at the time the web was still something known about only by computer geeks, and learned just enough HTML (WYSIWYG?! Not in 1994!) to put together a shoddy site (long gone from the net).

Somehow, something happened and 15 years intervened, and I am now trying to find my way in a world of CSS, Javascript, SEO, and PHP/MYSQL. The thing is, I understand the basic principles of all this stuff, but how I am I going to catch up with all those lost years? It’s really frustrating knowing, for example, that you need to learn to program in PHP (let’s face it, not THAT difficult) to do some basic stuff, when I am keen to get just cracking on and actually do something practical with it, fully aware of the potential of the technology, and not wanting to sit through hours of tedious tutorials writing “Hello World” test programs!

Oh the trials and tribulation of an “expert beginner”!
