    Serbia Bike Trek: Day 7 - Tara-Bajina Basta-HOME

Distance travelled: 47km; Total climb: 450m; Total descent: 1300m (doooown from the mountains); Current location: home sweet home.

Well, that really is the end of the great Serbia Bike Trek! But it wasn’t quite all over yesterday as I thought. After a hot shower, a proper meal and a proper night’s sleep in a proper bed, not to mention waking to a fantastic bright sunny morning, we suddenly thought we might have a few more kilometres in us yet! There was just one more thing we really needed to do to complete this trip, and that was do a loop round the Tara National Park (albeit a smaller one than planned) and see the view of the canyon.

By the way, if you are thinking of coming to Serbia for a mountain holiday, Tara is surely the area you ought to come to. It is by far the best maintained, presented and tourist-friendly part of Serbia we passed through on this trip, with proper maps, signs and tourist centres, and miles and miles of walking and cycling tracks through spectacular mountain and forest scenery.

Tara Canyon - Banjski kamenI won’t bore you with the details of the trip back home, but just show you a glimpse of what we saw today. This is the view (click for full size) that awaited us at the top of a small climb - from Banjska stena, you can see the Tara canyon and the river Drina, and across the river - Bosnia.

This spectacular view might not be the highest point according to the altimeter, but it was indeed the fitting end that I was hoping for for the great Serbia mountain Bike Trek.

Thanks to everybody who was following our progress via the blog and shouting encouragement - I owe it you to post a full report with proper pictures (the ones I was sending were shot on a Nokia 6600, hence not exactly the highest quality) in the very near future. In the meantime, I am off to bed because tomorrow is the Fruska gora 80km mountain bike marathon - I wouldn’t miss that for the world… :)
