    Snow-biking!

I’ve been getting round to doing this for ages - I posted pics from our Serbia Mountain Bike Trek in the MTB-Serbia Gallery, but I have also got some bits and pieces of video from the trip.

Ever tried riding on snow? We haven’t had any for a couple of years now, but it is quite a laugh ploughing through a few inches. On our big mountain trip, though, when we got to our first mountain, Kopaonik, we discovered there was still snow on the ground which was over a metre deep in places! It proved to be quite a major obstacle because you can forget riding on it - most of the time it was push or carry, and even then both rider and bike were apt to sink in.

Well, it didn’t stop us trying! Here Robi attempts the Five-Metre Snow Wobble, impressed with Zoli who has just successfully negotiated the section. That’s me shouting encouragement in Serbian and laughing maniacally (vids are ultra lo-res, for speed!):

He makes it look so easy!

Flushed with his recent success, Zoli has another go (seen in the distance, the furthest away) , seems to be making good progress, and then becomes separated from his bike in stylish fashion.

It really is impossible riding on this - even if you get loads of momentum going sooner or later you either slip, hit a lump of snow, or the wheels dig right in and the bike sinks half a metre into the snow.

It was sort of fun for a while, but after several kilometres of carrying/pushing/falling over we decided to cut our losses and ride the long way round on paved roads. Handy tip: mountain-biking above 1500m (5000 ft) is probably best left till the beginning of summer…!
