How much can you pile on a bike? (off to Tara national park)

Loaded-up bikeI have already announced a forthcoming trip to Žabljak, Durmitor in Montenegro in a recent post - this is to let you know about the latest developments.

The field has been whittled down to Straja and myself, which is kind of nice, we will be more flexible with just the two of us. This will be the first time for me taking “everything” with me on the bike, tent and all. And it really is an exercise in moderation. Not just moderation but downright minimalism. We really need to keep things light as we will be riding offroad, but there is nevertheless a mounting pile growing on the back and front of my bike.

This is even with the MINIMUM of clothes - and a bit of washing powder (I see a daily washing ritual on the cards), virtually no food other than coffee - the rest will have to be bought on the way, minimal tools (repairs will all be carried out with the help of rocks and bits of string). The general idea is to keep the height of the back panniers at least BELOW the level of the saddle! You can see in the picture where I have done a practice run at home and things ARE getting precarious already!

    Tara too!

So why oh why, you may ask, have I also agreed to a 4-day trip JUST BEFORE the Žabljak trip down to Tara national park, where I have been cycling before, but usually in terrible weather (actually, the second trip wasn’t bad, just short)? Well, I just couldn’t resist - a friend called Zoran suggested it - he has not been on a “real” cycling trip like this wanted to go and anyway, I haven’t explored Tara properly yet. It has fantastic potential for mountain biking and deserves a closer look, and is good for beginners too because it’s fairly well mapped out - I have a tourist map calibrated for Ozi Explorer, so I have been able to get some GPS tracks from the Freebiking site and plot them on there. Also, it’s not a million miles away from Užice, where the next leg begins from on Monday, so it will be just a short cycle over there after the weekend.

Watch this space for pictures and hopefully live reports!
