Yes, winter is grim as ever. Seems like most cyclists are adopting the usual approach to the season - dig in, try to keep up some form of fitness (probably via the hated gym, trainer, running or some such) and wait for spring to come.
That’s understandable for the most part, but if it has snowed in your part of the world then you definitely shouldn’t miss out on the experience of: snow-biking!
A friend who is slightly more loony than me egged me onto join him on Fruška Gora, Novi Sad’s local “mountain”. That’s Marko pictured below, just for the record, the one in the shorts (I drew the line there).
More pictures here, and there is also a short video clip below so you can get a feel for our little jaunt. We didn’t try anything fancy/risky, but I can tell you in short that we had just the right amount of snow, about 4-5 centimetres, and with decent nobbies on there was plenty of traction, such that I managed to haul myself up most of the first section of the Marathon route, hard-going even without snow (good exercise)! And it was just good fun - though I know some of the more serious mountain-bikers out there have actually been doing some sort of racing out there, but that’s pushing it for me.
The only time we really got cold was on the way back on the open road - that was nasty! But it was well worth it - if you haven’t tried it yet, ON YOUR BIKE and get snow-biking! It beats the trainer any day of the week. More snow expected here this week - I am raring to go!
